An interview with Nico
Who are you?
My name is Nicodemas, and I am the eyes and heart behind Full Spectrum Photography. I started taking pictures at the ripe old age of 12 years old, wandering through the woods behind my childhood home with a dirt cheap, 110mm film camera, and nearly 35 years later I'm still just as excited about the last photo I took as I was the 1st.
Why photography?
I have grown up believing, for better or for worse, that I don't see the world around me quite the same way as everyone else. While that can lead to endlessly creative possibilities, one of the unexpected drawbacks of maintaining a unique perspective is that you oftentimes end up being the only one who sees it, at least until you find a way to effectively share it with others. For me, my camera was unquestionably the most natural way to share my perspective with others. In doing so, not only did I discover the joy of collaboration and connection through shared vision, but I also learned the wisdom and growth that comes from learning how to step outside of my own perspective for a little bit in order to life through the lenses of others. It was from these collective experiences that Full Spectrum Photography came about.
Why the name Full Spectrum?
There are two primary reasons why I brand the way I do. First, I have personally found it to be true that inspiration is most finely honed through nimble creativity, and I thrive when I am constantly challenged by new and different experiences. As such, I have branded in a way that allows me to pursue the full spectrum of collaborative opportunities that come my way in order to stay photographically spry.
What sort of work do you do?
I’m so glad you asked!
If you did any poking around through the galleries I have prior to reading through this, then you'll already have some idea of what my work encompasses, but the primary categories tend to break down like this:
Commercial and Marketing:
-
Corporate Headshots
-
Stock Imagery Portfolios / Catalog and Inventory
-
Marketing Projects/Social Media Campaigns/Web Design
-
Food Photography
Community and Events:
-
Festivals and Markets
-
Charity Events and Fundraisers
-
Marathons and other Sporting events
-
Conventions and Seminars
-
Holiday parties and other corporate get-togethers
Stages of Life:
-
Family photos
-
Reunions and family gatherings
-
Senior and Graduation photos
-
Engagement and Wedding photography
But the list doesn’t end here! I do commissioned work, aerial photography, forensic and legal photography; there really isn’t a limit to what I capture.
Wait, didn’t you say there were two reasons for the name?
The second reason I went with the name Full Spectrum Photography is because of my son. I have a wonderful boy named Ezra, and being his father is my privilege and joy. Some of the things that he loves and does are very unique to him, but so much of who he is isn't any different than any other kid his age. He loves stories and ice cream. He enjoys playing outside. He likes people, and it's a very genuine affection. His emotional well runs very deep and he wields very powerful feelings, sometimes well and sometimes with disastrous results. He will eat his own body weight in French fries given the opportunity, and if he challenges you to a round of Mario Kart odds are good you are about to get your butt handed to you. He adores animals, as well as bodies of water in nearly every form. He is most often gentle, kind, caring and attentive; sometimes he's an absolute monster. He loves a good joke, even though his idea of what a good joke is varies drastically from one moment to the next.
And, he just so happens to have autism.
As much as I live and breathe photography, raising this boy up in the way he should go is my chief duty in life and the role I live for most. Parenting him is my greatest delight, and because of this I couldn't pursue my second greatest passion without a nod to that part of our life somewhere in the name. Additionally, I have encountered so many families with kiddos like mine who have avoided family photos because of the fears and challenges they believe they will encounter with the “average” photographer. I get it, and I’m with you on that. Send me a message and we’ll talk about what it means to capture your family well!
